The term DaaS (Desktop as a Service) refers to a cloud service that provides virtual machines (VMs) using a client operating system such as Windows 10 or Windows 11. This allows for the use of applications familiar to users, such as the Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), video and music streaming, collaboration software like Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Zoom, and VoIP telephony software, which are very common in call centers and telemarketing hubs.
DaaS is offered under a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) hosted by a service provider that possesses a highly resilient infrastructure with redundant access links. From a technical perspective, IT administrators can easily automate several operating system and application updates for virtual desktops, instead of performing individual logins as required with traditional desktops.
With remote work on the rise, the use of virtual desktops allows professionals to work from anywhere and at any time, making it possible to increase productivity and maximize the workday, as there are no concerns regarding commuting time or transportation costs. This positively impacts the employee’s quality of life.
The service is ideal for companies of all sizes, from small to large enterprises. It is very useful for companies that need access to remote resources anywhere, whether for collaboration, software development, or project management. Furthermore, it can be made available to all business areas of the company, such as accounting, HR, and finance.
A VPN creates a tunnel between two networks, allowing them to connect and transfer data. An enterprise VPN allows end users to connect to corporate resources such as applications and data. It works through a client on end-user devices, enabling them to connect to a private network via a public network.
Security is a major consideration with VPNs, as users upload and download data during use; therefore, important company data will always end up stored on the end user’s device. A VPN also grants end users direct access to a portion of the corporate network, and if the connection is compromised, unauthorized access to the company’s network may occur.
With DaaS, the user has access to their virtual machine from any location and device connected to the internet through a secure protocol. Since the virtual desktop remains within the DaaS provider’s datacenter, data and applications do not leave for the external environment where the user is located. In this connection established by users, only the desktop screen display is transmitted, making DaaS more secure than a VPN connection.
Display communication protocols provide end users with a graphical interface for a remote virtual desktop. Blast Extreme is a display protocol created by VMware to offer an immersive and feature-rich experience for end users across various devices, locations, media, and network connections. Blast Extreme is part of VMware Horizon DaaS, which is the desktop virtualization platform utilized by Edge UOL, representing the latest generation of desktop virtualization and remote application delivery software from VMware.
In this article, I was able to present to the reader the basic operation of a virtual desktop infrastructure and a VPN. Technological evolution always forces us to break paradigms and discover new ways and means to do what we already do today, in a faster and more efficient manner. We simply have to get used to them.
